The World Sickle Cell Day
19th June 2023
World Sickle Cell Day is observed globally on June 19th each year. It provides an opportunity to
shine light on the impact of sickle cell disease (SCD) and to advocate for improved care and support
for those affected.
The theme for the year 2023 is “Building and strengthening Global Sickle Cell Communities,
Formalizing New-born Screening and Knowing your Sickle Cell Disease Status”. This is a call
to recognise the first step (understanding the genotype in infants and adults) in fighting sickle cell
disease, thus breaking its cycle, as it is an inherited disorder being passed down through generations. Please click to read more
